Events marking the Year of Faith

Here are a number of events in Rome to mark the Year of Faith, which begins Oct. 11:

  • Oct. 11: 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Second Vatican Council. Mass in St. Peter's Square, concelebrated by officials of the Synod of Bishops, the presidents of the world's episcopal conferences and by participants in Vatican II who are still alive.
  • Oct. 21: Canonization of seven new saints, including two from North America, Blesseds Kateri Tekakwitha and Marianne Cope, and a young Filipino catechist martyred in Guam, Blessed Pedro Calungsod.
  • Jan. 25: Ecumenical celebration at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls.
  • Feb. 7: Exhibition on St. Peter the Apostle opens at Castel Sant'Angelo.
  • April 28: Pope Benedict XVI confirms a group of young people.
  • May 5: A day "dedicated to expressions of popular piety."
  • May 18: Catholic movements, "both old and new," gather in St. Peter's Square on eve of Pentecost.
  • June 2: Feast of Corpus Christi. Eucharistic adoration is planned at the same time all over the world.
  • June 16: Sunday dedicated to the Gospel of Life.
  • June 22: Year of Faith concert in St. Peter's Square.
  • July 7: Seminarians and novices gather in St. Peter's Square.
  • Sept. 29: 20th anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
  • Oct. 13, 2013: Dedicated to the presence of Mary in the church.
  • Nov. 24, 2013: Closing celebration of the Year of Faith.
